With *L’Incendie*, Brigitte Fontaine and Areski Belkacem have created a work that is free-spirited and profoundly unconventional, reflecting their artistic approach. This album occupies a unique place in the history of French music, far removed from traditional song formats. Brigitte Fontaine showcases her expressive and unpredictable voice, ranging from whispers and poetry to bursts of madness, whilst Areski crafts a minimalist musical accompaniment, drawing on folk, Middle Eastern and experimental influences.
The album stands out for its intimate atmosphere, its enigmatic lyrics and its freedom of expression. Each track seems to shift between song, theatre and sonic exploration, giving rise to a world that is at once strange, sensitive and fascinating. Rejecting conventions, the duo prioritises emotion, inventiveness and spontaneity, making *L’Incendie* a record unlike any other in the musical output of its time.
The Charly Records reissue brings this unique work back into the spotlight and allows fans of alternative music to rediscover a key chapter in the collaboration between the two artists. As daring and timeless as ever, *L’Incendie* will appeal to vinyl collectors and enthusiasts of experimental song, musical poetry and creations on the fringes of mainstream trends.
