Ennio Morricone – Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight (2015) – Double vinyl

Decca – 4769494

Morricone’s Return to the Western Genre. This was his first time writing a brand new score for a Western in over 30‑40 years. Until this film, Tarantino had not commissioned a fully original score — he had typically used pre-existing music or songs. This changed with Hateful Eight, where Morricone composed new music specifically for the film. The score includes some material Morricone composed in the past (for example, unused themes/instruments from The Thing) repurposed or modified to fit this film. The music tends toward sparse, cold, dramatic orchestration, evoking the film’s snowy, claustrophobic Western‐mystery environment.
