Jeremy Spencer and The Children (1972) – LP

Columbia – KC 31990

Jeremy Spencer was previously a member of Fleetwood Mac (1967‑1971), known for playing slide guitar and early blues, especially Elmore James‑styled, plus doing 1950s rock ’n’ roll and parody songs. After leaving Fleetwood Mac abruptly in February 1971 during a US tour, Jeremy Spencer joined the Children of God. The Children of God is a Christian movement that has been controversial; Spencer was involved with them for many years. His life after Fleetwood Mac was heavily shaped by this affiliation. Musically, while some of his earlier solo work leaned into retro / blues rock parodies or covers, this album adopts a more contemporary rock style (for the time) with influences from bands like The Byrds, The Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, Creedence Clearwater Revival. Spencer performs vocals, slide guitar, and piano on it. The Children (band members) contribute harmonica, guitar, sitar, tambourine, bass, vocals, drums/congas/tablas etc., giving a somewhat eclectic instrumentation.
