The Brian Jonestown Massacre – My Bloody Underground (2008) – Double red vinyl

A Records ‎– AUK011LP

My Bloody Underground is the tenth (or thirteenth by some counts, depending on compilation / reissues) studio album by The Brian Jonestown Massacre. It was released on April 15, 2008 on A Records, the label run by frontman Anton Newcombe. The album was partly recorded in Liverpool (August 2007) and then largely completed in Reykjavík, Iceland (October 2007). It marked a return after a several‑year quieter period (following And This Is Our Music in 2003 and some EP work) and included contributions from Icelandic musicians and Mark Gardener (formerly of Ride) on “Monkey Powder.” Neo‑psychedelia / shoegaze / experimental drone: The album turns more inward, more abstract, more hazy. Lots of reverb, echo, layers of noise. It embraces mood, texture and mood shifts over crisp songwriting or accessible pop hooks. My Bloody Underground represents a turning‑point of sorts. After several more accessible albums, it’s a push into more abstract territory. It feels like Newcombe testing limits: how far he can stretch the psychedelic envelope, how much atmospheric disorientation he can impose, how much the listener will follow him.
