The Beatles – Let it Be (1970) – LP

Apple Records – 2 C062 – 04433
The album was recorded mostly in January 1969 (Twickenham Film Studios and Apple’s studios) under the working title Get Back. Part of the project was filmed; this material became the documentary Let It Be (released concurrently with the album) which shows the Beatles rehearsing, developing songs, and finally performing the famous rooftop concert at their Apple building in Savile Row (30 January 1969) — their last public performance. It represents the end of the Beatles’ studio‑album releasing career (as an entity). Even though Abbey Road was recorded later, Let It Be was the last album they released as a group. The Beatles originally intended minimal overdubs, straightforward live‑studio recordings. They hired Glyn Johns to assemble versions (sometimes called the Glyn Johns “Get Back” versions), but none of his mixes were accepted by all members. Ultimately Phil Spector was brought in to produce the released version. He added orchestral parts, choirs, extra instrumentation, etc. Some of these additions (especially on The Long and Winding Road, Across the Universe, I Me Mine) were controversial, particularly with Paul McCartney, who felt they departed from the original “live” vision.
